The Masks We Wear

Grad-Show 2016 | Art-School Project

As part of the contextual reference module, I chose to explore the topic of ' The Masks we Wear'. The main objective behind this project was to reference art movements contextually and culturally , and go on to use that with respect to one's own art.

Idea

As a society we have all become so judgmental. Instead of encouraging and supporting uniqueness in one another, we've developed these masks.

Masks as means to seek validation, understanding and form connection with others.

We keep changing  these masks so often, even though it's exhausting and draining us from within.

The only time we truly ever take it off being when we're alone by ourselves,

and sometimes even then it's hard to take it off.

My idea through this particular artwork was to get the conversation going , opening up to reflecting on the following questions:

Are we truly ourselves? What faces do we portray to the world we live in? How can we truly start being ourselves, no matter what social situations we find ourselves in?

Concept

Using the ideals of Social Realism

(Read more about the art movement on https://www.moma.org/collection/terms/96 ) ,

and taking inspiration from Milan based artists Carnovsky's RGB art project style (Read more and check out their works on https://www.carnovsky.com/RGB.htm)

each colour and light in this artwork highlights some of the masks we wear like:

Mask of strength

Strength Persona

(Highlighted in Red Light)

That face that makes it seem that we're so strong, invincible, knowing how to hold it together .

Mask of positivity

Positive Persona

(Highlighted in Green Light)

That face that we wrap with whatever we can  (i.e. a  smile, clothes, things, that holiday you went on) and all that we share across social media to make it seem so perfect.

Mask of Intellect

Intellectual Persona

(Highlighted in Blue Light)

That face that makes you seem so smart all the time, feeling special, that not keeping it up in all aspects of life will somehow make you feel lesser than (or normal).

Breaking free- being authentic

Authentic Self

(Highlighted in darkness)

The one that represents your true self, that can come forth only once we break these masks we wear. The one that will set you free and be yourself.
